Extracted from the Ida Grove Pioneer newspaper in 1947 Obituary of Per Alfred Larsson Eng – 5 April 1947 Alfred Eng was born on 14 June 1867 at Vaster Gotland, Sweden. He was the oldest of ten children born to Lars and Elizabeth Eng. He passed away at his home in Arthur on 5 April 1947 at the age of 79 years, 9 months and 22 days. He came to America in 1884 at the age of 17 and for about three years worked on a farm north of Odebolt before starting to farm for himself in Hayes township south of Arthur. He was united in marriage to Beda Skoger on 14 October 1895. To this union were born six children. One daughter, Mildred, who passed away in infancy, preceded her father in death. He lived on a farm west of Arthur for thirteen years after his marriage, then moved to a farm south of Arthur where he lived most of the time until moving to Arthur in 1938. The Engs had the privilege of celebrating their golden wedding anniversary on 14 October 1945. As a boy, he was confirmed in the State Lutheran church of Sweden. After accepting Christ as his personal Saviour in 1915, he and his wife together were baptized and joined the Arthur Evangelical Free church. He faithfully attended the services while he was able to do so. For the past twelve years, he has been confined to his home because of very ill and pneumonia set in illness. Last Thursday he became which caused his death. He was a faithful and kind husband and father and his presence will be missed in the home, especially by his kind and loving wife who has faithfully cared for him these many years. But because he was ready to meet his God, for him it is a release. He leaves to mourn his passing his devoted wife; one daughter, Hazel, Mrs. Earl Bilstene, Arthur; four sons, Carl of Des Moines; Clarence of Galva, Elmer and Harry of Arthur; thirteen grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Ellen Beecraft of Bell Garden, California and Mrs. Lena Segerstrom of Storm Lake. Funeral services were held at the Arthur Evangelical Free church, Tuesday afternoon, 8 April 1947, Rev. John Hedlund officiating. A mixed quartette composed of Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Linman, Mrs. John Hedlund and Henry Tunberg sang "Near to the Heart of God" and "Shall We Gather at the River’ and Mrs. John Hedlund sang a Swedish solo, "Jesus Allena" which was a favorite song of Mr. Eng. Mrs. Herbert Tunberg was the accompanist. Interment was in the Hayes township cemetery. Pallbearers were: Herbert Tunberg, Reuben Carlson, Henry Lansink, Bob Nelson, Ed Nelson and Henry Petersen.
