Connie was a friendly little girl with a tomboyish charm who loved animals, especially horses.
She was the beloved ten-year-old daughter of Peter Smith and Helen Smith. She lived in
Wyoming where her grandfather, Nels Smith, was a former governor of the state. She was
spending part of the summer of 1952 at Camp Sloane, a YMCA camp in Salisbury, Connecticut.
She had a great time enjoying all the outdoor activities. When she'd been there for two
weeks, her mother and grandparents made the drive from Greenwich to celebrate her 10th
birthday. A few nights later, she fell on the tent platform and hurt her hip, so she borrowed
an ice pack from the infirmary, and then went to bed. The next day, it is thought that Connie
was involved in a tussle with a camp-mate and ended up with a bloody nose. Then, on the
morning of July 16, Connie told her tent-mates that she planned to forego eating breakfast
because she wanted to return the ice pack. She then grabbed her red windbreaker and left.
At some point later that morning, counselors found the discarded ice pack and determined the
girl was missing. She still had a week of camp left, but it is believed that the visit from her
mother and the tussle with the camp-mate had left her very homesick. Then, while walking to
the dispensary, she realized she'd forgotten to bring the ice pack. And it is assumed that it
was then that she decided to just go home, so she started walking away from the camp and
down Indian Mountain Road. She was seen picking daisies along that road, and asked several
people how she could get to Lakeville, Connecticut, which was about a half mile away. She
was last seen walking on U.S. Route 44 near Salisbury later in the day attempting to hitchhike.
She was never seen or heard from again. After camp counselors discovered she was missing,
a massive search ensued but did not produce any clues as to where she went. The camp
caretaker seemed to be the last person to see her walking on the side of the road away from
camp. He stated that because she was tall for her age, he thought she was just a counselor
taking a break. Foul play was suspected, but over the years the case went cold. However,
Connie's daddy, Pete, never gave up hope, and went to Connecticut every year thereafter
trying to find something to explain what happened to his little girl. There have been several
suspects throughout the years, but no one was ever charged in the case. Connie is survived
by her mother, Helen; her father, Pete; her brother, Nels; her maternal grandparents, Mr.
and Mrs. Jensen; her paternal grandparents, Nels and Marie Smith; and many other relatives.
Sadly, her body was never recovered, and this is Connie's only place of remembrance.

Circumstances of Disappearance
Connie was last seen picking daisies, as she walked along U.S. Route 44 in Salisbury. She
was seen looking for a ride. She was never seen again.
Earlier on that day, Connie had walked down the driveway that wends through Camp Sloane,
the Salisbury summer camp where she was staying. She was going to the camp dispensary to
return an icepack she had borrowed the previous evening after she fell out of the tent and
hurt her hip. Instead, with just a week of camp remaining, Connie left the icepack in her tent
and walked on past the stone pillars that mark the camp entrance. She turned right on Indian
Mountain Road and paused to pick some daisies, a camp caretaker later told police. Others
also saw her on the road.
Connie set off for the nearby village of Lakeville. When she hadn't returned almost three
hours
later, camp officials called state police. Despite massive search efforts she has never been
found.
