Donald Ray Bilsten was born March 3,1932, the son of Harvey and Anna Johnson Bilsten. He
died Friday, June 30, 2000 at his home in Denison, Iowa at the age of sixty-eight.
Don was born on a farm in Crawford County, Kiron, Iowa. He was baptized on January 10,
1943 at the Kiron Baptist Church and later confirmed on December 29, 1957 at the Zion
Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. He received his education at the Kiron Community School,
graduating with the class of 1949. After completing his education, Don entered the United
States Navy on April 7, 1950 and attained the rank of Gunner's Mate 3rd Class. Awards and
honors he received were National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal,
Korean Service Medal and two stars. He received his honorable discharge January 22, 1954.
On August 3, 1958, Don was united in marriage to Betty Louise Petersen at the Zion Lutheran
Church in Denison. The couple settled in Denison and were blessed with the birth of three
children. For most of his life, Don did construction and concrete work with his brother, Max.
Don was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Denison, Denison American Legion and V.F.W.
and the Disabled American Veterans. He was a very loving and caring husband, father and
grandfather who enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and reading. Don also enjoyed socializing in
a game of cards.
Don was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Helen Shives. Survivors include his
wife, Betty of Denison; three sons, Tom Bilsten and his wife, Peggy of Phoenix, Arizona;
Bruce Bilsten and his fiancee, Colleen of Olathe, Kansas; John Bilsten of Algona; three
grandchildren; one brother, Max Bilsten and his wife, Marie of Denison; one sister, Ramona
Koster and her husband, Vince of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; one brother-in-law, Barney
Shives of Papillion, Nebraska; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held at 3 P.M., Monday, July 3, 2000 at the Zion Lutheran Church in
Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated the service and grave; side rites held at the
Crawford ' Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Karen Kahl provided the organ
accompaniment for congregational hymns "Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound", "The Old
Rugged Cross" and "On Eagle's Wings". Pallbearers were: Ryan Segebart, Dennis Marten,
Mike Petersen, Jim Segebart, David Bilsten and Gary Shives. Military honors were Denison
American Legion Post No. 8 and V.F.W. Post No. 2504. The family invited everyone in
attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by Zion's
Evening Guild. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.
