An orphaned young man, 25 years old, Olof OLSON, who later changed his name to William
STOLT, was a member of the same immigrant group as the WESTERLUNDS. Being in the same
company, William STOLT and Margaret WESTERLUND kindled an affection for one another and
were married in March of 1851, 4 months after their arrival in the US.

The years 1852 and 1853 were the Cholera years in Andover, IL. Iin 1865, Hans
WESTERLUND, came to visit the STOLTS when he returned from the Civil War. His uniform
consisted of an overcoat of light blue adorned with a long cape. He carried a muzzle loading
musket and kept his gun powder and shot pouch under his left arm.
Home was a sort of log cabin (near Andover, IL) which contained a large living room and one
bedroom, and later a new house was built and surrounded it with two rows of poplar trees to
serve as a windbreak.
Feeling he needed more land for his family, William STOLT moved his family to Pilot Mound, IA
in 1868, where he bought 160 acres of prairie and 114 acres of timberland. In April 1868, the
STOLT family set out for Iowa with 8 horses, a wagon, and some household goods. They
crossed the Mississippi River by ferry. They then loaded their household goods and horses
into a freight car to Marengo, IA, and proceeded to Boone, IA. Since it was in the spring, the
frost was going out of the ground. There were many ponds and sloughs to cross with no
roads. Finally the STOLTS arrived at their new land near Pilot Mound, IA, where the building of
their house had begun while they were enroute. They sowed to wheat the ground under
plow. There followed three years of grasshopper infested crops. William had to borrow money
for seed, feed, taxes, and living. These were real pioneer days with no roads, no churches,
and schoolhouses far apart. The father used to preach on Sunday afternoons in a
schoolhouse three miles west of his farm. In winter when the ground was covered with snow,
and the thermometer registered zero, the prairie wolves used to follow him home and snap
their jaws at the horse's back legs because they were hungry.
In 1876, William rented a small farm near Kiron, IA. After another year of losing the crops to
grasshoppers, the STOLTS moved to the Mons Mellberg farm in Wheeler Township in Sac
County. There the family lived for four years, farmed and had fair crops. In 1880, William
bought 80 acres of prairie land one mile east of where they had lived and built a new house.
This was a wild tract mostly covered with oak grub. The STOLT brothers helped to break it. Six
head of horses were required to pull one bottom plow. It took nearly two years to clear the
land and prepare it for cultivation.
William did veterinary work as his Grandma OLSON had done that sort of work in Sweden. He
continued this work until the family moved to Odebolt, IA.
They (Margaret and William) lived in Odebolt, IA.
Margaret and William STOLT had eight children.
