I am standing outside the birthplace of my great-grandfather, Johannes Nilsson, near Orahultstugan, Sweden. The building is both a house and barn under one roof. It is no longer lived in, but serves as a small museum. It is located in a small valley surrounded by forest. My great-grandfather emigrated to the United States in 1884, when he was 18 or so years old. I visited his birthplace 100 years later with my grandparents, Lowell and Elsie Bilsten, and my mother, JoAnn (Bilsten) Drews. My grandfather was the youngest of Johannes' eight children.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie on November 25, 1998; four sisters: Lillian Larson, Elsie Skarin, Florence Skarin and Agnes Linde; three brothers: Harvey, Ralph and Russell Bilsten. Survivors include: one daughter, JoAnn (William) Drews of Hutchinson, Kansas; grandchildren, Stephanie Drews of Hutchinson; Shannon Rayl of Salina, Kansas; Sheridan (Jeff) Johnson of Essex Junction, Vermont; Susan (Mike) Horton of McPherson, Kansas; Staci (Neal) Dellett of Leawood, Kansas and Sara (Hans) Hummer of Grosse Point Park, Missouri; 14 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.Memorial services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 9, 2006 at Grace United Methodist Church in Wichita, Kansas. Lowell Herbert Bilsten, 94, passed away on February 5, 2006. He was born in rural Crawford County, Iowa on January 31, 1912. His parents were Swedish immigrants, John and Mary (Sederberg) Bilsten. He was the youngest of eight children. He graduated from Kiron High School in 1930. He married Elsie Koch. He worked on the farm with his father until moving to Wichita, Kansas in 1941. He was employed by Beech Aircraft until retiring on January 31, 1977. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Wichita.He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie on November 25, 1998; four sisters: Lillian Larson, Elsie Skarin, Florence Skarin and Agnes Linde; three brothers: Harvey, Ralph and Russell Bilsten.
